Not only does DIY-ing keep her 4-year-old daughter, Coco, and 6-year-old son, Quincy, occupied, it’s given her insight into their individual personalities: “Seeing them be creative and interpret concepts has been so eye-opening and endearing,” she said. Below, she provides a foolproof guide to giving last year’s sneakers a tie-dye look with markers and rubbing alcohol—effectively a wearable, energized take on all those children’s sidewalk-chalk drawings that have colonized your Instagram feed. “This is an easy and impressive way to upcycle,” she said of the simple (though potentially messy) undertaking, a hands-on collaboration for parents and grade-schoolers. Supplies
White sneakers, colored Sharpie pens, small bowl, rubbing alcohol, dropper.
Step 1
Doodle on the sneakers using colored Sharpies. Cover the entire surface.
Step 2
Fill a bowl with rubbing alcohol. Using the dropper, drip alcohol over the doodles.
Step 3
Once the colors have bled a little, let the shoes dry completely before wearing.
