Retailers and essential businesses serving the public during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic are increasingly asking customers to put on a mask while shopping but mandating the action isn't quite doable.

The goal is to help contain the spread of the coronavirus and more states and cities are instituting mask wearing, according to a CNN report. Store operators are worried about angering consumers and losing customers at a time when sales are dropping given stay-at-home mandates and they also want to avoid any conflict in the store environment.

States and cities that have instituted the requirement include Hawaii, Miami, New Jersey, Maryland, New York and Austin.

"Keeping grocery stores safe for both customers and workers means everyone must wear masks," Marc Perrone, president of the United Food and Commercial Workers union, told CNN. "We are urging both elected leaders and grocery chains to make masks mandatory for both customers and workers."
