This Leelanau Wine Trail Bike Tour is an easy day-trip adventure - MLive.com

SUTTONS BAY, MI – Grand Traverse Bike Tours has long been a go-to spot for bike rentals and guided cycling trips in this waterfront corner of the Leelanau Peninsula. But this summer, when many people are seeking outdoor adventures that come with a side of social distancing, staff have designed a flexible day-long winery tour on two wheels that lets people call their own shots in terms of which stops to visit and how long to ride.

And it all comes with a behind-the-scenes support team who will deliver your catered lunch, ferry back any bottles of wine you purchase along the way, or just be on call in case you get in a jam.

“Our guests are loving this tour this year,” said Nick Wierzba, owner of the tour company along with Suttons Bay Bikes. “This is the perfect post-quarantine activity. Plenty of fresh air, sunshine and a little wine!”

The self-guided Leelanau Wine Trail Bike Tour is an easy-to-follow, mapped route that allows riders to pick from up to seven different award-winning wineries. They can pedal to the ones of their choosing and hop off their bikes for pre-arranged tasting appointments, which are all set up for them in advance.

The route’s main corridor is a big section of the flat, paved Leelanau Trail, which stretches from Traverse City north to Suttons Bay.

Along the route are wineries with outdoor tasting options like Shady Lane Cellars, Mawby Vineyards and Winery, Black Star Farms and Ciccone Vineyard and Winery.

“You are able to soak in the scenery of the orchards and vineyards safely along the paved Leelanau Trail, then make detours to the wineries just off the trail,” Wierzba said. “Our staff pre-arranges any tasting appointments in advance for your tour, along with custom-tailoring a route to your level of adventure. Cycle 12-15 miles for the day, visiting wineries along the way, usually 3-4 miles apart. Best of all, we pick up any wine purchases and bring you lunch to enjoy overlooking the vineyards.”

If the route turns out to be a little tougher than you thought, or if the day just gets away from you and you need a ride back, you’ll have a support van on call to help out. While most riders don’t need this, it’s nice to know it’s there.

The tour site’s wesbsite describes it best: “We provide service for flat tires, mechanical failures, losing your way, severe weather rescue, transporting wine purchases and just about anything else that may come up. Think of us as a distant command center helping you to pursue your own perfect day.”

What’s included in the self-guided tour:

  • Bianchi Hybrid Bike & helmet rental (eBike or carbon road bike upgrade options are available)
  • Route planning advice provided on the morning of your tour
  • Map highlighting routes and destinations
  • Catered deli box lunch delivery (*special dietary needs can be met)
  • Van support (wine purchases pickup!)
  • Roadside assistance
  • Souvenir water bottle/water

The cost is $69 per person. Wine-tasting fees are not included.

The bike tour company also has a couple newer perks for guests that are all about convenience.

The first is a selection of eBikes. These have been sought-after so far this season. For some, they like the ease of use. Others like being able to cover some extra miles during the day trip, maybe even allowing them to add an extra winery to their itinerary.

The second is the company’s contactless pickup. This is available for both its bike rentals and its tours. When reserving a bike or a tour online, people can pre-select a contactless pickup. It’s also a nice way to streamline the check-in process.

“The contactless pick up is super easy,” Wierzba said. ‘Select the ‘Contactless Pick Up’ option when you make your reservation. Then pick up your bikes out back, pre-reserved and ready to roll. No need to enter our store! Please call when you arrive to our shop and our mask-wearing rental staff will meet you out back with your pre-sanitized bikes”
