Watch: Cardinals hover but it's not that easy - North Country Public Radio

During the pandemic we’ve had to limit our travel. It’s been a great time to explore the natural beauty in our own backyards. Doyle Dean started collecting video of the birds at his feeder. He wanted to know more about them so he reached out to ornithologist Tom Langen. This week they look at cardinals.

Cardinals are with us all year in the North Country. This wasn't always the case, they've come from the southern U.S. The warming temperatures due to climate change suit them and as people make food available during the winters they've been sticking around.

Their wings are sort of oval-shaped. It's a shape that's good for maneuverability, according to ornithologist Dr. Tom Langen. Cardinals can hover when they need to but it's not that easy.

"When it wants to stop and stall it's actually kind of swimming in the air," adds Langen.
