Making a decision in the 2020 Jefferson County commissioner’s race has been hard for me. Rarely does an electorate have a choice between two really good candidates.
I know both candidates and highly respect their work and contributions to our county. Both candidates share my basic values and I would trust both of them as human beings and in the role of our next county commissioner. Both deeply value our quality of life in all of its complexities and interactions, and they both have acted affirmatively to improve our community.
I thank the local chapters of the League of Women Voters and the American Association of University Women for their sponsorship of discussions forums.
I have finally come to a decision for the following reasons.
The work of Jefferson County Commissioners is defined within the culture and characteristics of our local government. Only Lorna Smith has proven that she can work within that world, listen to the diversity of public opinion, find solutions, and implement change. Lorna has also shown that she has specific and practicable action items on her “to do” list if elected.
I will vote for Lorna Smith in November. And, I will stand by and with whichever one is elected as our next county commissioner.
