Travis Roy turned an 11-second hockey career into a lifetime of philanthropy.

Roy was paralyzed in his first shift as a Boston University hockey player, but then became a motivational speaker and started The Travis Roy Foundation, which fundraises for the victims of spinal cord injuries. Roy died at 45 years old on Thursday, and Bill Belichick opened his Friday morning press conference by recognizing his passing.

“First of all just on behalf of the team, pass along our condolences to Travis Roy’s family," Belichick said. "He’s been such a great inspirational story to all of us. Nationally but certainly in this area. His positive outlook and the way he handled his difficult situation was just incredible. Glad I had an opportunity to interact a little bit with him and his foundation. Just a sad day for a kid that went through so much and handled it in an incredibly positive way.”

Belichick explained he didn’t get a ton of one-on-one time with Roy, but the coach was clearly moved by what he was able to accomplish and his demeanor in the face of adversity.

“We supported their foundation," Belichick said. "Our family has some connections with the foundation as well. So we’ve been supportive, as everybody has in this area, and again, just a lot of admiration and respect for Travis and what he did and his approach to life.”
