It is very easy, during this coronavirus pandemic, to complain, become frustrated, and even blame society for what is influencing the constant changes.
This is so true for our youth, and we adults understand how you are feeling. It’s difficult for us too.
Life can be as smooth as any newly paved street but one thing is for sure, one day there will be potholes and we have to learn to avoid them so that we can reach our destination. Many times, we focus on why something’s happening to you rather being thankful.
I ask all students to join me in adopting this pledge of thanks:
I am thankful for my parents and/or guardians who have changed their routine so that I can have a comfortable home to study and do classwork while adjusting to distance learning. I am thankful because you have taken the time to make sure that I’m disciplined, responsible, and organized so that I can accomplish and complete my academic goals.
I am thankful for my teachers and others who support me in a way that I’m not used to. While it is difficult not seeing you face-to-face, I know you care about me and will continue to inspire me to do my best. I am thankful that you are willing to help make sure my goals and expectations in your classroom are met.
I am thankful for my siblings who inspire me to do my best and give me the quiet time I need to complete my school assignments. I appreciate my older siblings assisting me when my teacher is not available to do so. I must also give thanks to myself for helping my younger siblings with their assignments.
I am thankful for all the assistance I receive from the school district, such as providing me with a computer and internet services if needed. While I prefer being on a school campus, interacting with my friends and staff members, this is one of the ways to stay in touch during these difficult times. I’m also thankful that our schools are being refurbished so that it will be safe for all of us when we return to campus.
I am thankful to my community for being patient, wearing masks, being kind and respectful toward each other, and always displaying great attitudes and modeling good society characteristics for us. We want to be recognized as good people like you when we become adults.
I leave you with this quote from an unknown source: “We are so often caught up in our destination that we forget to appreciate the journey, especially the goodness of the people we meet on the way. Appreciation is a wonderful feeling, don’t overlook it.”
