So how do you defend the guy? Better yet, how do you solve him? Hall-of-Fame coach Tony Dungy has an idea, and he shared it with us on “The Eye Test” during last week’s inaugural broadcast.
“It’s simple to defend Mahomes,” Dungy said. “But it’s not easy. You have to have some elements. You have to have four guys who can create pressure and rush the passer without blitzing.
“I thought that was the key (last Monday night when the Patriots played the Chiefs). Bill Belichick watched Baltimore blitz and get torn to shreds. He watched everybody go after Mahomes and said, ‘That’s not the idea.’ (So) they rushed three. They rushed four. They had some different guys coming, and they were able to get pressure. But they did it without five and six guys.

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports that Texans owner Cal McNair has already spoken with Watson about the team’s head coaching search. The star quarterback informed McNair that he would like the Texans to strongly consider Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy.
Bieniemy was one of the hottest names on the head coaching market last offseason, and many were shocked and bothered that he did not land a job. He received interest from multiple teams but was not hired, which led to increased frustration among black coaches around the NFL.

Joe Theismann didn’t cringe, but he was curious to see how Alex Smith would react to getting hit. Smith had been waiting a long time for this moment — and that contact.
He didn’t have to wait long after entering an NFL game for the first time since breaking his right leg in gruesome fashion 23 months ago. Following a standing ovation from his wife and children in the stands, he absorbed three sacks from Aaron Donald and six overall, got up each time and finished the game that Washington lost 30-10 to the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday.
“The first one felt good,” Smith said. “It was obviously nice to know you’re fine, and it was nice to kind of knock the cobwebs off, so to speak.”
Smith, 36, completed his remarkable comeback 693 days after a broken tibia and fibula, 17 surgeries and a life-threatening infection put his career in jeopardy. Watching on television, Theismann — who broke his right leg in eerily similar fashion 33 years to the day before Smith’s injury — couldn’t help but be impressed.
“The first time he stepped up in the pocket and I saw him move, I thought, ‘OK. He’s back,’” Theismann told The Associated Press by phone. “I think the question has been answered. He’s been sacked. He’s scrambled around a little bit. And in doing so, he’s answered the questions.”

Unsurprisingly, Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes is also among the top-selling jerseys in the league. Not far behind is last year’s MVP, Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson.
Rounding out the top five is Dallas Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb. It’s clear the Oklahoma faithful wanted to show some love for the former Sooners star.
Lamb is the only rookie to crack the top 10 and the only wide receiver to do so.

According to a source familiar with the NFL’s scheduling scenarios, when the league decided Sunday morning not to play Broncos-Patriots on Monday night, they debated an indefinite postponement, which would essentially have put the “Week 18” scenario in play.
Instead, the Broncos-Patriots game was moved to next Sunday — and a contingency plan involving eight games, eight teams and six switched bye weeks was implemented. However, once a team that’s already had its bye can’t play in a given week, Week 18 will likely become a reality.
This could happen as soon as Monday morning. If positive tests among the Buffalo Bills and/or Tennessee Titans force Tuesday’s game between those teams to be postponed — and given that the Titans have already had their bye — the game would be indefinitely postponed (potentially pushed to Week 18).
In a Week 18 scenario, the league would likely only play those games if they had a significant impact on the playoffs. It’s possible that if the game was, say, to decide whether a team was the fifth or seventh seed, the NFL would elect not to play it.

Atlanta Falcons coach Dan Quinn and general manager Thomas Dimitroff, who saw their team start 0-5 for the first time since 1997 after a Sunday loss to the Carolina Panthers, have been fired.
Team president Rich McKay will assume day-to-day oversight of football operations in the interim, according to a statement Sunday from the Falcons. An interim head coach is expected to be announced Monday.
Defensive coordinator Raheem Morris and offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter, both former head coaches of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, are candidates for the interim job, along with assistant head coach/linebackers coach Jeff Ulbrich. Ulbrich was slated to assume head-coaching responsibilities if Quinn contracted COVID-19 during the ongoing pandemic.
The emotions of a last-second win against the New York Giants could not overcome the disappointment the Dallas Cowboys felt Sunday after losing quarterback Dak Prescott for the season.
Prescott suffered a compound fracture and dislocation of his right ankle that required surgery Sunday night. The injury occurred on a 9-yard run while being tackled by Giants defensive back Logan Ryan with 6 minutes, 33 seconds to play in the third quarter, and it quickly brought a hush to the AT&T Stadium crowd, teammates and opponents alike.
Prescott left the field, his right leg in an air cast, on a cart and in tears. He was taken to a local hospital for surgery to clean out the wound and repair the fracture, a procedure that went “very well,” a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Cowboys head team orthopedist Dan Cooper brought in noted foot and ankle doctor Gene Curry to do the repair Sunday night, the source said.
A source told ESPN’s Todd Archer that Prescott faces a recovery timetable of four to six months.

Jimmy Garoppolo’s return to the field was short lived.
The San Francisco 49ers benched their starting quarterback after a disastrous first half Sunday against the Miami Dolphins in which he threw two interceptions as the team fell behind by 23 points. He would remain sidelined as the Niners dropped their third home game of the young season, 43-17.
Backup QB C.J. Beathard took over the reins on the Niners’ first possession of the second half and promptly led the offense on a 74-yard scoring drive, capped off by a 19-yard touchdown pass to Kendrick Bourne. That was the high point of his day, as he completed just 9 of 18 passes for 94 yards and lost a fumble. Last week, Beathard replaced a struggling Nick Mullens in the fourth quarter of a loss to the Eagles.

Chiefs-Bills game officially moved to next Monday
As the Kansas City Chiefs played the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday afternoon, the NFL officially announced all the schedule changes that will be made as a result of positive coronavirus tests in the past week.
Among these changes is moving the Chiefs game against the Buffalo Bills — originally scheduled as Week 6’s Thursday Night Football game — to the following Monday. The game will start at 4 p.m. Arrowhead Time in Buffalo. Like the original Thursday night game, it will be carried on FOX.
The league had first conditionally rescheduled the game for next Sunday, but finally decided that another Monday night game — the Chiefs’ third of the season — would work better.
