Stars broadcaster Daryl “Razor” Reaugh joined The Musers on Sportsradio 96.7 FM/1310 The Ticket [KTCK-AM] to discuss the Stars' improbable playoff run, where Dallas goes from here and more.
Here are the highlights of that conversation, edited for clarity:
Was this the most fun Stars postseason run in recent memory?
Dayl Reaugh: "I agree, [but] it stings to watch some of the postgame interviews from the Stars players after. It added another layer of bizarreness in the bubble where you’re watching John Klingberg and Tyler Seguin have to explain having their innards ripped out as you could hear the music and the partying of Tampa Bay in the background.
"It was just one more layer of the surreal nature of this. And you’re right. It was improbable at times, it was incredible. Some of those comebacks and they refused to die during those earlier rounds. Other times it was infuriating with penalties or other things that went on with this journey they went on for a couple of months.
"But overall [it was] unforgettable. We’ll never ever forget this team and this run this year. The timing of it, the fact that it happened in a pandemic in an empty building, it culminated basically a week before the season would have been starting this year.
“The home opener should be either midweek, a week from now or next weekend. Instead they finish off a season that was basically a calendar year long and came within two wins of winning the Stanley Cup. [It’s] just amazing.”
Was there anything left in the tank for this team?
Reaugh: "None. Zero. They were on fumes and probably bankrupt emotionally with what went on at the weekend with the back-to-back games. And they get the game of their lives out of a couple of grizzled veterans and they push it to a sixth game, but you can’t lose that much glue out of your group.
"That’s essentially what happened, unfortunately, to the Stars. They started losing guys [like] Blake Comeau and Radek Faksa. They were without guys like Ben Bishop and Stephen Johns from earlier on in the playoffs. They lose another young gelding in Roope Hintz. After a while it’s just too much.
"Your line integrity and your depth just gets cratered. Against great teams, and you’re going to play a great team when you get to the Stanley Cup Final, [Tampa Bay] had injuries. Guys were playing hurt, no question, but they only had one guy that couldn’t play at all, and a pretty significant guy in their captain Steven Stamkos.
"But I think the overwhelming number of guys that were out, impactful guys in your checking game. That’s really the core of what the Stars were and have been for the last few years... once that eroded it was going to take a superhuman effort by an individual or a couple of individuals, and near perfection, and a lot of lucky bounces, [but] they just got suffocated last night by a team that you’ve got to tip your hat to.
"That’s a Tampa Bay team that last year got their soul crushed getting swept in the first round. And then this year they had to go through this gauntlet in the greatest defending teams in the league. They basically were able to overcome four of the five best defensive teams in the league in Columbus, Boston, the Islanders and then the Dallas Stars in the final.
"You have to be able to at least match that defending on the other side and then make the most of your chances offensively, and they did that primarily on the power play in this series. [They] are very worthy Stanley Cup champions.
“As it’s said the only thing worse than not getting what you want is someone else getting it. That’s what it felt like when the Stars had to shake hands as the second-best team in the bubble this year.”
