What we know about the 2020-21 MU Basketball team so far...is that it is difficult to compare Marquette’s 2020-21 team with the 2019-20 team. Only one year of difference…but it looks like we are watching a completely different team. Why do I think that?
1. ’20-21 runs a different offense...
+instead of best utilizing Markus Howard...one of the top scorers in D-1...you have 5 different players who can score and be the leading scorer
+ They pound it to the lane to draw fouls and dump down low to the bigs
+ the three pt. shooting is not as good so far…so teams are sagging on the passing lanes..
2. different personnel and even the returnees are different
+ Health: Theo John and Koby McEwen are healthy…and more consistent.
+Theo is ten times the post threat he was last yr…his hard work has paid off…he can score over each shoulder…use each hand and drop step with each foot. Tremendous improvement.
+ Dawson Garcia and Justin Lewis give you inside outside scoring options...and decent passing...that will get better when they get more experience with Big East competition...quickness...length of opponents
+Koby is much better this yr. healthy.... I was watching some talking head on FS1....showing that Koby has a big scoring night [ 16 to 20 pts] followed by a lower scoring game[8 to 12 pts]...every other game...he needs to be more consistent... well that is what the stats say...but what does the eye test tell you? It says that Koby scored 28 vs GB....and that the next opponent UCLA really put the screws to him...so teammates were open.... also, foul trouble is a factor.... you cannot score when you are on the bench..
+ DJ Carton is learning and improving exponentially....he did not start vs Pine Bluff or E Ill...but he is hitting running 15 foot tear drops vs UCLA and Creighton... learning the offense...getting stronger with the ball....the confidence is growing....Bo Ellis on our podcast interview...really likes him...that means a lot…the MU greats often hand out compliments with an eye dropper.
+ Greg Elliott....knock wood....he is healthy....and can give you a three pt. option off the bench
+ Jamal Cain....much improved…confident...mature....not a creator except for himself...because of his high dribble and sometimes poor handle...but this team has more scoring options...and all are unselfish passers...so they can utilize Cain much more effectively on a kick out pass for a catch and shoot from three....and Jamal has worked hard on his ‘Jajuan Johnson’ pullup...
#2 Justin Lewis scores two of his 18 pts vs Wisconsin
On Defense...the 2020-21 team has more:
1. Size and Length at all spots...
2. Shot blockers....in base defense....in help defenses...with Theo, Garcia, Lewis and Cain...
3. the best defenders? The Seniors..
+ Theo is healthy....so better reb and shot blocker...
+Koby guards the opp's best player...and takes on the challenge...the toughest player on MU's team...the way he battled Cunningham from Ok State...Koby takes it personally...and like Lloyd Walton, wears his emotions on his sleeve
+ Cain...having a 6-6 SF with length...really messed with Wisconsin...and he is a very good rebounder...
4. this team rebounds..
+ I love the stat look at Theo....concern is he getting enough reb? hard to do it when your biggest competition comes from teammates Garcia, Lewis and Cain.. the tough rebound in traffic…Jimmy Butler and Lazar Hayward had it….Sam and Joey had it…now MU has 4 C/F who can bring it….
+Justin Lewis is the rough/tough PF MU has been looking for since they joined the BE.... the rebounder who can score...Asst Coach Dwayne Killings said that what separates the BE team is the talent and flexibility of the forwards...
+ the guards are bigger and they can rebound. Koby McEwen and DJ Carton both rebound.
5. this team can switch on picksand you don’t lose much out high....as the length allows Garcia, Lewis and Cain to play off and still block shots... The guards...Carton and Koby are bigger...and can bump better than Markus Howard could....
Miscellaneous characteristics..
1. against Wisconsin....MU was able to out rebound them...and get the Badgers in foul trouble by driving to the lane...MU shot more FTs.....that we did not see coming...
2. the best half of the yr. was 2H at Creighton....it come together on both ends...and Elliott was read hot off the bench.
3. The Seton Hall game....showed what a team with savvy veteran Big East players can teach Garcia, Lewis and Carton...about mistakes....knowing what the refs are looking for/exploiting this...and how Mamu is one of the top college players around with a lightning quick first step....hopefully the learning curve will be short...
4. Fatigue must be monitored for Garcia, Lewis and Carton...this is a crazy yr....need them mentally and physically at 100% for MU to have a chance.... the Bench must come thru...with Akanno, Torrence and Osa....giving quality minutes...
The Biggest play of the first 10 games? The Justin Lewis game winning tip in vs #4 Wisconsin. It is fun to win your Super Bowl.

The conclusion…so many unknowns…will the games be played? Interrupted?
What do we know…this team has players with ceilings that have not been reached. Each Big East game will be a fight to the finish….every win this yr. will be a great win….every loss this yr. will be devastating…can MU get to the Dance down in Indianapolis? Stay injury free…Win 8 to 10 games…and your wins over Wisconsin and Creighton…might be even more impressive in March…Hang on for a wild ride beginning tonight in Wash DC.
