Syracuse basketball bounces back with easy win over Miami - syracuse.com

About seven minutes into Tuesday’s game against Miami, Syracuse looked like it might be repeating its performance from Saturday’s 20-point loss to Pittsburgh.

The Orange looked listless on both offense and defense as Miami jumped out to an 11-2 lead. Were the Hurricanes about to score 64 points in a half, as Pittsburgh had in the second half of Saturday’s game?

Then everything changed.

The Orange went on a stunning 23-3 run, grabbing control of the game and never letting go in an 83-57 win over Miami.

Syracuse missed eight of its first nine shots, but when the Orange got going, it hardly missed. After that rough start, Syracuse finished the half by hitting 13 out of 19 field goal attempts.

Syracuse took a 36-22 lead into halftime and then opened the second half with nine straight points.

The win improved Syracuse’s record to 8-4 overall and 2-3 in the ACC. Miami, coming off an impressive win over Louisville, slumped to 6-7 on the season and 2-6 in the conference.

Joe Girard paced Syracuse with 23 points, while Buddy Boeheim broke out of his recent slump with an additional 23 points. Quincy Guerrier contributed 18 points and eight rebounds.

After falling behind 11-2, the Orange got a huge boost from a pair of bench players.

Sophomore center Jesse Edwards was pressed into duty when Marek Dolezaj picked up two quick fouls. Then freshman guard Kadary Richmond replaced the struggling Buddy Boeheim.

Richmond made an immediate impact, picking off steals and facilitating the Orange’s offense. In just 12 first-half minutes, Richmond collected three points, two rebounds, five assists, two steals and a blocked shot.

Richmond finished the game with a career-high eight assists to go along with his seven points, three steals and two rebounds.

Edwards more than held his own in the middle of SU’s zone, using his 6-11 height and long reach to alter Miami shots. He had four points, a blocked shot, a steal and a career-high five rebounds by halftime.

Edwards topped his night with a career-best six rebounds plus seven points and two steals.

Syracuse played its 11th-straight game without Bourama Sidibe. The senior center suffered a torn meniscus in the Orange’s season-opener against Bryant on Nov. 27. The recovery time was stated at four weeks, but Sidibe experienced soreness in the knee when he returned to practice. He has not practiced in the last two weeks.

Syracuse’s next game is at home on Saturday against 16th-ranked Virginia Tech.
