We’re three days into January and Liverpool have yet to sign a centre-half which, given the general state of our injury list (far too long) is probably making several of us (this author included) a tad nervous. The boss is hedging his bets, however, and thinks the recent performances we’ve seen from Fabinho, Rhys Williams, and Nat Phillips may be enough to tide the club over if they’re unable to make a January transfer happen.
“We have solutions in the squad — obviously,” Jurgen Klopp said this weekend when asked about Liverpool’s plans this transfer season. “But we are struggling still with the injuries we have at this specific moment — it is happening most of the time it is in the centre-half position.”
“That’s clear. Some players are injured, play pretty quick like Joël [Matip] and get injured again. It just can happen like this, when it starts at one point and just doesn’t stop.”
Matip’s adductor injury will keep him out for three weeks, which will likely see either Williams or Phillips join Fabinho in defence against Southampton and Liverpool’s FA Cup match against Aston Villa.
“We have solutions in the squad and if we can, or if we will, do something in the window I don’t know, it’s really like that,” Klopp added, which is probably not what any of us want to hear. “It’s a very difficult transfer window, how you can imagine; not a lot of clubs have real money, some clubs don’t have money but don’t need money as well. So that’s the situation.”
It’s frustrating to hear that a squad that’s already been stretched thin may not get the relief they so desperately need, even if the younger players on the squad have stepped up to the challenge they’re faced with. But given the lack of real money that FSG and the club are likely working with, it may be best to tamp down on our expectations that we’ll see a signing before the month is over.
