Lakewood Smokehouse in Dallas is permanently closed, according to a post on Facebook.

“The last year and a half has been extremely difficult for the restaurant industry, and like many restaurants, between sales having not returned to pre-COVID levels and the cost of everything we buy increasing by 20-50% we have been just hanging on and hoping things would improve but unfortunately, that has not been the case,” the Facebook post reads.

Lakewood Smokehouse is closed as of July 22, 2021.

The owners had been vocal about the rising costs of beef, telling customers in May 2020 that “brisket is now more than twice as expensive for us to purchase as it was just a month ago,” our Nick Rallo reported.

Surging prices like that can be fatal for restaurants, in a climate when sales were already down. About 18% of D-FW restaurants closed between March 2020 and March 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Lakewood Smokehouse is one of many restaurants that continued to feel shockwaves from the pandemic long after some reported being “back to normal.” In a Dallas Morning News story from June 2021, we told the stories of three restaurants — similar to Lakewood Smokehouse — that made it through more than a year of pandemic-related losses, then still closed.

“It just feels cruel at this point, for these restaurants owners,“ Emily Williams Knight, CEO of the Texas Restaurant Association, said in June.

Restaurants in Lakewood, specifically, seem to be in flux right now. Lowest Greenville is hotter than it’s ever been, with more than nine new restaurants or bars opening or coming soon on that block — including one we called “Dallas’ most impressive date-night spot.” But mid-pandemic, other Lakewood restaurants like Penne Pomodoro and Kozy Kitchen shuttered. (“Coronavirus is a killer,” said one restaurateur at the time.)

Zoës Kitchen in Lakewood closed at the end of June 2021 but is expected to reopen as a new restaurant, Cava, soon. A new salad shop is opening at Mockingbird and Abrams, replacing the Boston Market that was there for more than two decades.

Lakewood Smokehouse opened in early January 2016, serving Central Texas style barbecue like brisket, burnt ends and jalapeño-cheddar sausage by the pound. But it was more than a barbecue joint: It had a menu of burgers, salads, pizzas and sandwiches, like a brisket cheesesteak and a turkey club made with in-house smoked turkey. It also sold chicken wings, brisket queso and other bar snacks.

A whiskey cocktail served underneath a cloche filled with smoke was popular.

The restaurant was often packed on weeknights during early dinner hours, and kids could be spotted at nearly every table.
