(Aug. 19, 2021) Just a few weeks before the ground is littered with fallen leaves, town officials are weighing their options on a new ban on gas-powered leaf blowers. The issue is how to enforce it.
“We’re going to have to do some outreach,” town manager Libby Gibson said. “Enforcement isn’t going to be easy. It would have to be compliance-based. We don’t have anyone who could go around patrolling for leaf blowers.”
The article, written and sponsored by the political-action group ACK•Now, passed at the tail end of the full-day Annual Town Meeting in June. It had been set aside during a pared-down Town Meeting last year. It wasn’t something Gibson had on her mind.
Now she’s waiting for its certification from the state attorney general’s office. Town clerk Nancy Holmes expects that decision to come by Oct. 1. “Enforcement only works with high education,” Select Board chair Jason Bridges said. “We’re going to need a lot of education and public outreach for it to work.”
