Judy Foreman: Lemondrop Makes Shopping Easy for Parents AND Kids - Noozhawk

When my kids were growing up, it was a challenge finding a great selection of clothing and shoes in Santa Barbara, especially when they moved into age 8-14 sizes and wanted to pick out their own wardrobes.

Today’s local tweens have an extra challenge after the closing of many downtown retailers like Nordstrom and Macy’s, and other small mom-and-pop shops in La Cumbre Plaza. Many parents have resorted to online shopping, which can be very difficult for kids at that age.

So the timing could not be better for Lemondrop, a new Montecito shop in a fun, colorful space stocked with an unimaginable range of goodies and basics.

Located at the southwest corner of East Valley and San Ysidro roads in the Upper Village, the store opened in June in what had been the longtime home of Village Frame & Gallery.

The owner, first-time retailer Ana Rudnicki, is a Montecito resident whose own children are between the ages of 8 and 12. Ever since the family relocated from Texas four years ago, she knew there was a need for a store like hers.

“I had a great time sourcing products and clothing lines for both boys and girls,” she told Noozhawk.

Most of Lemondrop’s items are priced under $60 as Rudnicki, a mother of four, says she understands that parents “don’t want to spend an arm and a leg on clothing that is not going to get dirty and not fit forever.”

She also can relate to the shortcomings of online shopping, or even driving an hour or more south for more options.

“Shopping for shoes online is especially challenging,” she said. “When something shows up that doesn’t quite fit right, you have to ship it back and wait another two weeks for a replacement.”

Rudnicki and Lemondrop’s manager, Bree Wiffen, say they love seeing what kids want to wear.

“It’s very clear when they like something,” Rudnicki said. “Browsing and trying on your clothes and shoes at this stage of life has not lost its fun and excitement.”

Lemondrop’s selection is on trend with just the kind of merchandise a tween would love to wear — and parents and grandparents like me would love to buy. OK, I’ll admit I already did.

The store has a creative selection of shorts, dresses, shirts, cozy jammies, underwear for teen girls, great boy clothes, backpacks, jewelry and toys. Clothing brands include Candy Pink, Vintage Havana, DL1961, Feather 4 Arrow, Seaesta Surf and many others.

A large array of shoes and flip-flops are from brands like TOMS, Steve Madden, Salt Water, People Footwear and others.

There’s even a self-care section featuring nail polish, hairbrushes, lotions, body glitter and soaps.

Rudnicki has put together a space that is original to Santa Barbara and, once discovered, will be a favorite not just for back to school shopping but for all occasions, or just hanging out with friends.

Lemondrop, at 1485 East Valley Road, Studio 1, is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
