I was having a bit of difficulty deciding on a topic for this week’s column, so I decided to address the subject of the never ending pandemic with a focus on the impact it is having on logical people. On a personal level I like to use my common sense and a logical approach to life, but that philosophy is becoming increasingly difficult to pursue. Here are a couple of examples of real life challenges for logical people.

Here we are at the grocery store: Why is there plastic on the payment keypad? Cashier: to protect people from Covid-19. Me: but is everyone not touching the plastic keypad the same way they would the regular keypad? Cashier: no words. Confused look. Me: Why do you not pack the grocery bags anymore? Cashier: Because of Covid-19, to reduce the spread of catching or spreading the virus. Me: But a shelf packer took it out of a box and put it on the shelf, a few customers might have picked it up and put back deciding they do not want it, I put it in my cart, then on the conveyor belt, you pick it up to scan it… but putting it in a bag after you scan is risky? Cashier: no words, confused look again.

Here we are at a fast food drive through: Server: (holds a tray out the window with a bag of food for me to grab). Me: why is my bag of food on a tray? Server: so I do not touch your food because of Covid-19. Me: did the cook not touch my food? Did the person wrapping my food not touch it and then touch it again when placing it in my bag? Did you not touch the bag and put it on the tray? Did you not touch the tray? Server: no words. Confused look.

Here we are attempting to be socially appropriate: We are told that if you cough or sneeze do it in your elbow or sleeve, as well as being told not to shake hands or hug anyone or you will spread the virus.. To greet people do an elbow tap instead. Me: Elbow tap? Is that not where you tell people to sneeze or cough – into their elbow? Now you want people to tap each other with that elbow. Would it not be safer to sneeze into your elbow and shake hands like we did before Covid-19, particularly in light of the excessive amount of hand sanitizing we are encouraged to do? Now I have the confused look.

Finally, here we are at a local restaurant: Hostess: Okay, I can seat you at this table right here (4 feet away), but I will need you to wear a mask to the table. Me: what happens when I get to the table? Hostess: you can take off the mask. Me: then it is safe over there? Hostess: yes. Me: are those fans blowing above the table? Is that the air-conditioning I feel? Is the air circulating in throughout the area? Hostess: no words. Confused look.

Life is difficult for logical people right now. We are being encouraged to live without the ability to process situations and execute logic. Thank goodness I encountered this logical sign at a local mall: You can choose not to wear a mask. Then you must also remove all your clothes to enter. It is all or nothing. It is about choices. Thank you.
