Ride Easy: A very short rifle - Estes Park Trail-Gazette

George reached in, tipped the pickup seat ahead and pulled out a very short rifle. The barrel had a bulge in it and was peeled back somewhat like a banana for a few inches. It was probably six inches shorter that it was when new.  George  and Pops looked at Ed and me.  Neither of them said a word.

George looked down and saw the two empty .22 shell boxes under the pickup. The badger ran to a wood pile where it turned to face George, who followed it there. It hissed and growled, but couldn’t dig and had nowhere it could go. George kicked it in the nose and it died on the spot.

George looked over at us and explained that a badger skull was thin right where the nose bone was and it could be killed pretty easily. He went on to say he’d trapped a lot of them as a kid. Ed and I looked at each other and figured the worst was over.
It was very quiet for a while. George looked at his rifle, looked at us back at the rifle. Pops had a look on his face I’d never seen before and it was aimed toward me. Ed and I never wiggled nor said anything.

I can’t remember what Pops and George said to us. BUT….we both knew we had better be very good boys from that day forward. AND we’d better not complain about the work. AND we better be nice to our sisters and brothers. AND we better do our chores without complaint. AND NO! we couldn’t go to the movie like we asked earlier in the day. AND we’d better not mess up again or we will most certainly go to Hell. AND right now we’d better sit in the pickup and not move until we go home.

Ed and I did not move. We asked each other why we didn’t get spanked like we thought we would. After some reflection we decided they were so mad that they might have hurt us.

My mother was afraid of guns. So, in the interest of keeping home fires warm, Pops said we wouldn’t say anything to Mom about the episode.

Boy, that was fine with me. I didn’t need to hear again what was still echoing in my head. He also gave me additional chores to do when we got home. Then, he said what was the worst thing I’d ever heard. He said he was ashamed of me.  That’s when I cried.
A week or so later Mom was getting groceries at the local grocery store. She and Ed’s mom, Fern, happened to see each other as they shopped. Fern said to Mom, “Wasn’t that a Hell of a thing those two boys did the other day in the hay field?” Mom didn’t have a clue what Fern was talking about so Fern told her.

I didn’t get in any further trouble, but Pops and Mom closed their bedroom door while they  discussed the situation.
