Why The Suicide Squad's Jotunheim Scene Was So Difficult to Shoot - Screen Rant

Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for The Suicide Squad.

James Gunn has shared a behind-the-scenes photo from The Suicide Squad and described the difficulties faced by the cast and crew when shooting the film's iconic Jotunheim scene. Set on the South American island of Corto Maltese, the film sees the newly assembled Task Force X, comprising of Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn, Idris Elba's Bloodsport, John Cena's Peacemaker, and many more, tasked with infiltrating and destroying a former WWII base turned top secret facility called Jotunheim on behalf of Viola Davis' Amanda Waller. A standalone sequel to David Ayer's Suicide Squad from 2016, the film opened to great acclaim from critics but its box-office performance has disappointed as a result of growing concerns about COVID-19 Delta variant.

When The Suicide Squad's remaining members attempt to infiltrate the top-secret Jotunheim facility, where Project Starfish/Starro the Conqueror is being housed with the aid of Peter Capaldi's Thinker, they face great opposition and have to contend with heavy rain. The sequence is a lengthy one and also one of the most visually stunning in the film, in part thanks to the torrential rainstorm the the group battle their way through. The rain itself was achieved through an enormous rig that simulated the deluge, but being an outdoor shoot, filming was still at the mercy of the elements.

Posting on Instagram, Gunn described the scene as "one of the hardest-to-manage" due to having to "shoot in various stages of disarray and various weather over a period of months". He added that it became difficult to match weather conditions with his original vision for the scene, or even ensure continuity between shots. However, Gunn added that "thanks to camera tricks and color-timing … it seems seamless in the movie". The director accompanied the description with a photo of Robbie, Elba, David Dastmalchian (Polka-Dot Man) and Steve Agee, who did the motion capture for King Shark, shading themselves between takes, highlighting the level of heat they had to deal with on set. Gunn has been active on social media in sharing pieces of trivia and behind-the-scenes information about making The Suicide Squad, and it's good that he is continuing to do so as it certainly makes for interesting reading. He's clearly proud of his work and wants to show it off to the world, which is more than understandable. Peter Capaldi has also previously discussed shooting the scene in question, which was his first day on set, and described how impressive the rig was to ensure the rain flowed properly. Now with the added information about how difficult it was to manage the scene amid all the weather difficulties, it seems all the more impressive.

Considering that the external Jotunheim scene is one of the most striking in the film, with the weather perfectly fitting the tone and adding an even greater level of drama, it's understandable why Gunn would want the conditions to be perfect. Even though he was able to use technical rendering to make things more seamless, there are still a number of variables to balance; especially when dealing with an external shoot of that size. The director has done excellent job in bringing all of these variables to bear though, and he should be proud of what he has accomplished. The visuals presented in The Suicide Squad are incredibly impressive, and hopefully Gunn will bring a similar standard to the upcoming Peacemaker spin-off series and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
