Falcons Earn Easy Sweep of Incarnate Word - Air Force Academy Athletics - U.S. Air Force Academy Athletics

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – Backed by a program-best DI hitting performance, the Air Force volleyball team made quick work of Incarnate Word this afternoon (Sept. 18), as it closed out the non-conference season with a dominating 3-0 victory over the visiting Cardinals. In a match that took just over an hour, the Falcons claimed the easy 25-14, 25-12, 25-12 victory to improve to 3-0 at Cadet East Gym this season.

Senior Bailey Keith tallied nine kills on 11 attempts (no errors) for a career-high – and Cadet East Gym Record – .818 hitting percentage. Sophomore Savannah Neal and freshman Mac Russ both added six kills on nine attempts (no errors) for matching career-best .667 outputs, as Air Force combined for a .508 average (34-3-61) – the best hitting performance for Air Force at the Division I level and a new Venue Record. Sophomore Caroline Reinkensmeyer assisted on more than half of the team's kills (18), while also collecting two of the team's six service aces.

In addition to its strong offensive numbers, Air Force also held a significant defensive advantage in the match, out-blocking Incarnate Word by an 11-2 margin and holding the visitors to -.011 hitting (25-26-89). Highlighted by eight stops from sophomore Joi Harvey, seven different Falcons combined for 22 assisted blocks on the day. Keith registered five of the team's shared blocks, while juniors BrookeLyn Messenger and Taleah Cooper each added three. One of 10 different Falcons to record a dig, sophomore Allie Griffith tallied a match-best nine to round out the Falcons' stat leaders.

Air Force came out strong in the opening set, quickly turning a one-all tie into a 14-3 advantage. Keith tallied a pair of kills and teamed up with Harvey for two blocks in the opening run (6-2), while seven-straight serves from senior Lily Landis included multiple kills from Russ and senior Vittoria Juarez (14-3). Incarnate Word scored five of the next eight points (17-8), but kills from Neal, Keith, Harvey and freshman Ella Tschuor quickly pushed the advantage back into double figures (21-9). The first collegiate kill by sophomore defensive specialist Madison Felker kept the lead at 10 (23-13) and, as the Falcons forced UIW into back-to-back attacking errors, Air Force captured the 25-14 victory.

Harvey contributed to the first three points of the second set, registering a kill and teaming up for blocks with Juarez and Keith, respectively. A strike by Juarez and an ace from Griffith gave the Falcons a 5-1 lead and the two squads traded the next 14 points, with Keith and Russ each tallying a pair of kills during the back-and-forth action. The second strike from Russ sent Landis back to the line and quickly turned a four-point lead (12-8) into a 10-point advantage (18-8), as Landis served up back-to-back aces during the run. Air Force took a 20-9 lead following a Messenger ace, while consecutive kills from Neal pushed the advantage to 12 and a strike from Tschuor secured the wire-to-wire, 13-point (25-12) win.

Like the opening set, Air Force turned a 1-1 tie into a significant lead moments into the third, rattling off 10-straight points to take the 11-1 advantage. Keith tallied two kills and teamed up with Harvey for a pair of stops during the run, while Harvey added two more blocks (both with Messenger) and a strike of her own. Incarnate Word scored four of the next six points (13-5), before a Neal kill and Cooper/Tschuor block on back-to-back plays pushed the Falcons' advantage back to 10 (15-5). The teams traded the next eight points, while Harvey (17-7, 19-9) and Tschuor (18-8) putting down kills to maintain the Falcons' 10-point margin. The second kill from Harvey sparked a six-point run that included three-straight scores from Cooper (block with Messenger, kill, block with sophomore Aaryn Scires). The Cardinals added three points, but Air Force earned the final point for its second-straight 25-12 victory.

With the non-conference portion of its season complete, Air Force travels to Albuquerque on Tuesday (Sept. 21) to open Mountain West action against New Mexico.
