Florida Toastmasters gave a masterclass in breaking through barriers and unleashing the power within on Tuesday, August 17.
Unique techniques on how to deliver a powerful speech to engage an audience and hold them captive were shared at their virtual meeting. Themes are useful ways of curating a message or guiding and idea, and this meeting’s theme was ‘Feel the fear and do it anyway’. For the unacquainted, a Toastmasters meeting involves various attendees giving a short oral presentation which is followed by the experienced members offering constructive criticism and a bit of fine-tuning advice.
The meeting opened with practical tips on how to identify and overcome your fears shared by Ntombi Phaledi before Yolanda Komichi used the powerful tool of poetry to propose the toast of the evening to the month of August. Guest speaker, Verity Price, Southern African Champion of Public Speaking, then delivered her contest speech for the world finals entitled ‘A Great Read’, concluding her speech with a challenge: ‘When life gets tough write your own story’.
The importance of branding, harnessing the power of the universe to achieve your goals as well as coping with grief were just a sample of the deep and thought-provoking speeches designed to inspire self-discovery, empowerment and happiness. Sikhanyisile Mabhena, Area S2 Director, commented, “Life is like the changing seasons, always changing and unpredictable. It’s the choices we make each day that make the difference.”
The evaluation session was chaired by Tebogo Legodi and General Evaluator Karen Gray gave her input before Palesa Sekele was declared the winner of the Best Impromptu Speech for her ode to Winnie Mandela and Brenda Fassie.
