Easy Come, Easy Go: How ARYZTA (VTX:ARYN) Shareholders Torched 99% Of Their Cash - Yahoo Finance

ARYZTA AG (VTX:ARYN) shareholders should be happy to see the share price up 17% in the last quarter. But will that repair the damage for the weary investors who have owned this stock as it declined over half a decade? Probably not. Like a ship taking on water, the share price has sunk 99% in that time. While the recent increase might be a green shoot, we're certainly hesitant to rejoice. The million dollar question is whether the company can justify a long term recovery.

We really hope anyone holding through that price crash has a diversified portfolio. Even when you lose money, you don't have to lose the lesson.

Because ARYZTA made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally expect to see good revenue growth. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one does expect good top-line growth.

In the last five years ARYZTA saw its revenue shrink by 0.7% per year. While far from catastrophic that is not good. The share price fall of 57% (per year, over five years) is a stern reminder that money-losing companies are expected to grow revenue. We're generally averse to companies with declining revenues, but we're not alone in that. Fear of becoming a 'bagholder' may be keeping people away from this stock.

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

We'd be remiss not to mention the difference between ARYZTA's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price return. Arguably the TSR is a more complete return calculation because it accounts for the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested), along with the hypothetical value of any discounted capital that have been offered to shareholders. Dividends have been really beneficial for ARYZTA shareholders, and that cash payout explains why its total shareholder loss of 93%, over the last 5 years, isn't as bad as the share price return.

A Different Perspective

Investors in ARYZTA had a tough year, with a total loss of 15%, against a market gain of about 25%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. However, the loss over the last year isn't as bad as the 42% per annum loss investors have suffered over the last half decade. We'd need to see some sustained improvements in the key metrics before we could muster much enthusiasm. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
