Wild enter lengthy break with easy win over lowly Red Wings - St. Paul Pioneer Press

Anybody with a pulse could tell coach Bruce Boudreau on edge heading into Wednesday’s matchup with the Detroit Red Wings.

His biggest concern was that his players might have one foot out the door, thinking about the lengthy break to follow, much like the Dallas Stars did before their bye week last week when they suffered a ghastly 7-0 loss at the hands of the Wild.

It turns out there was absolutely nothing to worry about. Not with the lowly Red Wings in town.

If there were any questions about how bad the Red Wings are — they are on pace for one of the worst seasons in recent memory — the Wild furthered hammered home that point with an easy 4-2 win that wasn’t even that close.

Heck, the Wild scored every goal in the game, even though the scoreboard might reflect that.

Jordan Greenway, Mats Zuccarello, Jason Zucker, and Eric Staal scored for the Wild, and while Filip Zadina technically scored twice for the Red Wings, both goals went in directly off Joel Eriksson Ek and Ryan Suter, respectively.

Aside from that, the Wild held the Red Wings in check, and ran away with an easy win to make sure there was no sour taste in their mouth with 10 days off before their next game.

As dominant as the Wild were on this particular night, they did let the Red Wings hang around for a little bit, as Zadina bookended the first period with a pair of goals.

That meant the Wild actually trailed at one point during the game, though the game itself never truly felt in doubt.

Not long into the second, Zuccarello tied the game with a highlight-reel goal, and a little more than 60 seconds after that Zucker scored on a rush to give the Wild a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

For good measure, Staal added an insurance goal later in the second period, guiding the puck into the back of the net with goaltender Jimmy Howard laying helplessly on the ice thinking he had covered the puck.

That set the stage for the third period where the Wild calmly shifted into cruise control and coasted into the lengthy break in style.
