Father's Day gift ideas: Here are 7 easy, affordable things he'll love. Some are even free - AZCentral

Given all that’s going on in the world these days, taking time to focus on a simple holiday to honor fathers can be a welcome relief.

But this Fathers’ Day isn’t like most others. Restrictions in place to try and slow the spread of the new coronavirus have altered our lives in a variety of ways.

Some people are taking care to limit face-to-face contact with others, particularly older people and those with health concerns that might make them especially vulnerable to the virus. In other instances, concerns about travel make it hard to visit Dad if he lives beyond driving distance.

And traditional celebrations such as taking him out for a big steak dinner (or maybe a nice vegetable dish, it’s his day, let him eat what he wants) might not be an option if his favorite restaurant isn’t open or is only offering takeout.

Though things are different this year, there are still options. Following are a few suggestions on how to celebrate fathers everywhere, whatever the circumstances.

Dad’s Root Beer

If your dad is fond of dad jokes, this might be just the gift for him. Tell him you bought him a case of root beer with his name on every bottle. He’ll appreciate the humor. Look for it at grocery stores or go to https://ift.tt/30DKnp1 find locations that sell it and other Dad's merchandise.

Gift cards for his favorite local spot

Many local businesses have taken a hit during the COVID-19 shutdown. While many of those places are open again, some aren’t or maybe your dad isn’t quite ready to pull up a chair at his favorite table.

Consider getting your dad a gift card from his favorite restaurant, bar, store or even hotel. Even if he doesn’t use it right away, the money spent now could help ensure it will be open when he’s ready to go back.

Grilling accessories

Some gifts are classics for a reason. If your dad likes nothing more than putting a nice steak (or a hearty portobello mushroom, you know your dad better than we do) on a sizzling grill this could be a winning option. However, if your dad is one of those guys who has several grills and a smoker? (Yes, there is a difference) then you might consider a gift card.

You don’t want to get him what you think is the perfect grill brush when he swears by using a wad of aluminum foil to clean up. He’ll happily accept your fancy brush and thank you for it. But if you check back this time next year you might find it’s still in the box.

Get him a gift card for his favorite store because he probably has something in mind already that will put his cooking over the top.

Netflix Party

Is your dad a movie buff? Maybe he’d enjoy watching one of his favorites with you and the rest of the family. Yeah, you might have to sit through a cowboy classic, a war movie or have to watch “The Natural” for the umpteenth time, but it’s Fathers’ Day, he gets to pick the film.

If you can’t be there to do it in person, try this app that allows folks in different locations to sync up their computers or other devices to watch a movie together. There’s even a chat function so dad can provide his running commentary on the show.

Video chat

If your dad is one of the many among us who have been pushed out of the office by COVID-19 concerns, this might seem too similar to work. But this session won’t be about projects or goals, it will be about Dad getting the chance to see the smiling faces of you and other family members who aren’t able to visit.

If you dad isn’t familiar with the process, it might take a bit to walk him through it, but most people catch on fairly quickly. The format has its limitations – chances are somebody is going to have to be reminded to unmute their microphone or turn on the camera – but it’s a good way to stay in touch.

Try Facetime, Skype, Zoom or any other similar service of your choice.

Write your dad a letter

Yeah, it’s old fashioned, low tech and all of those things, but if you haven’t done it in a while he’ll appreciate it. The novelty of a hand-written card or note in this world of text messages and emails will be touching. Even if your dad isn’t usually a show his feelings kind of guy, it’s a thoughtful gesture.

And if you feel like it’s not enough, you can slip that gift card we talked about into the envelope.

Get him a weather radio

If your dad isn’t one of those guys who can tell what the weather is going to be by the ache in his trick knee (how many times have you heard the story about how it got that way?), maybe he’d like a weather radio.

The National Weather Service broadcasts weather alerts, forecasts and other information throughout the day on dedicated stations.

Sure, you can get weather alerts on your phone these days, but maybe your dad is one of those old-school guys who only uses his phone to talk. The monsoon is here. You want him to be safe, right?

Find a selection of weather radios at electronics and big-box stores or online.
