SAN FRANCISCO — Trading away Myles Straw also meant disrupting the Astros’ clubhouse chemistry, a conundrum James Click said weighed “very heavily” in his decision to finalize the surprise deadline deal.

“I think it’s the kind of thing early in my career I might not have (done), but a guy like Straw is difficult to trade from a baseball perspective but it also difficult to trade from a personal perspective,” Click said prior to Sunday’s game against the Giants.

“That’s conversations I want to have with the players and explain the thinking there because I don’t want them to think for one second it was done without considering that because it absolutely was a major factor in the decision.”

Straw was one of the Astros’ most popular clubhouse personalities. His lightheartedness and ability to relate to all types of players made him a critical piece of Houston’s culture. Straw had a special rapport with Yuli Gurriel often showcased on a number of Instagram stories.

Straw, Kyle Tucker and Chas McCormick were close friends, too. Tucker and Straw were enjoying breakfast together when Click called to deliver the news.

“You can kind of tell the guys are a little upset that Straw left,” McCormick said Friday. “But it’s a business decision to help the team win. Straw’s personality, we’re going to miss. He always brought a ton of energy.

“We’re going to miss his personality. Always was positive, too.”

Even before Click arrived, the Astros did not shy away from trading beloved clubhouse personalities. Tony Kemp’s departure during the 2019 trade deadline left the club clearly deflated.

“Ultimately, I still felt like we had to make the move and give Chas and Jake (Meyers) the opportunity,” Click said. “I felt like the overall roster is more functional this way, but it made the decision difficult from that perspective.”
