School districts across Florida and the nation have struggled all fall with a bus driver shortage the likes of which they haven’t seen before. Job fairs and pay hikes have made a small dent. But many continue to grapple with trying to get kids to and from school on time. Some districts are exploring more expansive solutions. Read on for that story and more Florida education news.
Pasco County schools are preparing to overhaul their bell schedule to make it easier for drivers to complete their routes. Every student in the district would be impacted.
The Osceola County school district is looking to partner with public transit to move students. It has 40 bus driver vacancies, WKMG reports.
The Alachua County school district also is trying to fill several job openings. Bus drivers remain a priority, Main Street Daily News reports.

The State Board of Education is poised to adopt new rules on civics education. The proposal, promoted by Gov. DeSantis and the Republican-dominated Legislature, aims to instill patriotism and teach characteristics of an ”upright and desirable citizen,” the News Service of Florida reports. The State Board meets at 9 a.m. Wednesday.

The Lake Wales charter school district’s superintendent quit eight months ago. It’s still looking for a replacement, the Ledger reports.
Florida continues to promote workforce education. Gov. DeSantis announced a new $6 million grant to build a education center at Pasco-Hernando State College, WUSF reports.
School boards are working to redraw their member districts. The Volusia County board narrowed its selection of possible maps to two, the Daytona Beach News-Journal reports.
The Florida League of Women Voters has been studying the state’s tax credit scholarship and voucher programs. It’s found little transparency or accountability in the system, WUWF reports.

A Broward County teen was arrested on accusations of making threats against several local schools, WTVJ reports. • A Pinellas County teen was arrested for allegedly having a gun on campus, WFLA reports. • Two Indian River County teachers were fired after being arrested in connection with a shooting incident away from school, TC Palm reports.
