A hard-working dad from Central New York is ready for a new challenge: Reality television.

Mike Shaffer, a 32-year-old Brewerton resident, is among 12 contestants on season 3 of “Tough as Nails,” premiering Wednesday. Host Phil Keoghan (of “The Amazing Race” fame) will welcome the crew to Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base in Southern California, where season 1 winner Marine Veteran Kelly “Murph” Murphy will guide them through their first challenge: Race to receive cargo dropped from a C-130 plane.

If that sounds difficult, it should. The series aims to celebrate everyday Americans who roll up their sleeves and work long hard hours, getting their hands dirty in order to keep their country running. Competitors are tested at real-world job sites in challenges of strength, endurance, life skills and, most importantly, mental toughness.

Shaffer, who works as a lineman with IBEW 97 for National Grid, fits the premise to a T. He’s used to working long hours in difficult Upstate New York winters to ensure the lights stay on at homes.

“You always have to be prepared for anything, any weather conditions, to help the community out,” he told syracuse.com | The Post-Standard in a phone interview. “Just keeping that electrical grid up.”

He said it helps him take anything that comes at him head-on, never giving up no matter how stressful or difficult it is.

“At the end, you’re doing something great for somebody to help,” he said of his job.

Shaffer, who graduated from Cicero-North Syracuse High School in 2006, said he’s motivated by his family. He was encouraged to try out for the show by his wife, who knows how hard his job is.

“Sometimes I’m away from the wife and kids for days and not seeing them, it’s tough. If anyone can go through that and play with electricity every day,” they can handle “Tough as Nails,” he said.

Shaffer said that if he wins the show’s $200,000 grand prize, he would put away money for college for their two children.

“I’d slow down with working a lot of overtime so I can be home with my family more,” he added. “Eventually I’d want to open up my own business to spend time with me.”

“Tough as Nails” season 3 premieres Wednesday, Oct. 6 at 9 p.m. ET on CBS. Episodes are also available to stream live and on demand on the Paramount+ streaming service.
