CASPER, Wyo. — A “large, potent weather system” creeping into northwest Wyoming Sunday night will bring significant snow and travel impacts to roadways including interstates, 80, 25 and 90, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Riverton.
Late Sunday through Tuesday evening, the Cody Foothills could get 6 to 12 inches of snow, with accumulations of 12 to 18 inches in the high terrain of the Bighorn, Teton and Absaroka ranges. Winds could gust as high as 35 mph.
“Travel could be very difficult to impossible,” the NWS said.
Central areas including Natrona County should start seeing snow by late Tuesday.
Total snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches are forecast for the lower elevations of the Powder River Basin and Casper.
Casper Mountain and the foothills of the Bighorn Mountains could see amounts closer to 12 to 24 inches. Winds could gust as high as 40 mph.
5 to 9 inches are possible in the Wind River Basin, with the highest amounts expected in the Lander Foothills.
In east-central and southeast Wyoming, 4-6 inches of snowfall is expected for lower elevations in Converse County and parts of Carbon and Platte counties through Wednesday morning. 12 to 18 inches are possible in the Snowy and Sierra Madre ranges.
The Interstate 25 corridor in the northern part of Laramie County could also see 1-3 inches of snowfall.
55-mph gusts are also possible Wednesday morning in SE Wyoming, leading to visibility impacts from blowing snow on the I-25 and I-80 corridors.
