CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (Iowa's News Now) — Travel will be tough throughout the day Friday, but it will get harder and dangerous as we head into the afternoon and evening.
A treacherous combination of snow, wind, and cold will create blizzard conditions that may make travel dangerous. Travel could become IMPOSSIBLE, especially on east-west roads and open/rural areas.
Snow will fall through much of the day and could be heavy at times. Winds are already strong and leading to blowing snow with low visibility in open and rural areas Friday morning into the early afternoon.
Winds will pick up and lead to blizzard conditions developing late Friday morning in central Iowa and into the afternoon in eastern Iowa. Persistent wind gusts of 40-55 mph will lead to significant blowing and drifting as well as whiteout conditions.
Snowfall totals of 5-12" of expected, but it doesn't matter how much snow falls because the impact comes with the blowing snow and much colder temperatures creating icy roads.
Per the Iowa State Patrol: "We strongly advise everyone to refrain from any non-essential travel.
Per the Iowa DOT: "Travel is expected to be nearly impossible in rural areas today.
Don't travel if you don't have to.
