DEMING, Wash. — Skiers have had a lot to be happy about following a significant snowfall in the Cascades followed by cold temperatures. But those heading to the Mt Baker ski resort were recently out of luck.
Both directions of the Mount Baker Highway (SR542) were blocked after a pole and power lines fell near Eastwood Road during a high wind event just after midnight on Friday, January 12th. Crews from Puget Sound Energy (PSE) and Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) maintenance crews reportedly responded to the scene just before 1am.
It was initially estimated that repairs would require 8 hours to complete and the lanes would be reopened. In the meantime, motorists were detoured around the closure via Kendall Road and Reese Hill Road (SR547) and Nooksack Road (SR9). The detour was a 26-mile route between Maple Falls and Deming instead of an 8-mile direct route.
WSDOT officials announced the work was completed and the lanes reopened about 25 hours later, shortly after 2am on Saturday, January 13th.

Due to historically low temperatures being experienced across Whatcom County and much of western Washington, Mount Baker Ski Area announced they will be temporarily closed on Saturday, January 13th.
The extremely cold temperatures on the mountain Thursday night through this morning impacted our equipment and operations in a manner that we needed to temporarily close today to rewarm our equipment and fuel lines.
Our crew is continuing to work throughout the day to do what we need to do to have things READY TO ROLL AGAIN TOMORROW (SUNDAY) MORNING for you. The Heather Meadows Lodge will be open today. Mount Baker Ski Area (January 13, 2024)
