CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (Iowa's News Now) — A long-lasting snowstorm will make it tough to travel in eastern Iowa Monday night through Tuesday night. Heavy snow combined with strong winds will lead to snowy roads, low visibility, and blowing/drifting snow.
TRAVEL WILL BE VERY DIFFICULT DURING THIS TIME.
THE TIMING
Snow will move in Monday night and fall for roughly 24 hours across eastern Iowa. Moderate snow showers begin tonight with wet/slushy snow as temperatures will initially be around freezing.
Snow will be steadily falling, but will get heavy at times with snowfall rates of 1-2" per hour. Heavy snow will be likely between 6-9 am Tuesday, right around the morning commute.
As snow continues to fall it will lead to low visibility and make it tough for crews to keep the streets clear. Snow will wind down by 6-9 pm Tuesday night.
SNOWFALL AMOUNTS
Heavy snow is expected across much of eastern Iowa. There are uncertainties concerning dry air on the northern side of the storm as well as where pockets of heavy snow sets up and how high the snow piles up.
Most of the area will see at least 8" of snow with the potential for pockets of 13+". Some lower totals are expected to the northwest due to dry air.
Snow will become fluffier with time and could start to get blown around as winds pick up. If snow is still falling as the winds pick up there could be brief periods of whiteout conditions.
THE WINDS
Winds will increase Tuesday afternoon and stay strong through the evening with gusts around 45 mph.
Blowing and drifting snow will be possible, especially in open and rural areas and on east/west roads.
THE BOTTOM LINE
Travel will be very difficult overnight Monday and through the day Tuesday. Don't travel if you don't have to, but give yourself extra time and have an emergency kit if you must go.
Snow will wind down Tuesday evening and the winds will relax by Wednesday morning. There may still be slick streets and some blowing/drifting early Wednesday.
