Small Business: These days it's easy to be in a funk - Des Moines Register

According to Dictionary.com, funk is defined as: “1. cowering fear; state of great fright or terror. 2. a dejected mood.”

These days it's easy to be in a funk

For example, last Friday at the bank it was crazy.

Phone calls, meetings, emails, challenges, challenges and more challenges set the mood for the day. Not a bad day, just really busy. When I finally got home after going in early, working through lunch and leaving late, I was in a funk. Then I looked at my Fitbit, and the lack of steps it showed that I took that day did not help lighten the funk I was in. The weather was iffy, so a walk wasn’t going to be in the picture either. For the rest of the night I think, but have not verified, that my wife kept a safe distance trying not to get drawn into the same mood.

I am happy to say that I rarely feel that way after a busy day at work, mainly because I really enjoy what I do and the people I work with.

On my desk at the bank, taped to my keyboard, are two reminders. The first is a quote from Leo Buscaglia that says, “Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.” When I stop and read it, I am reminded of the awesome responsibility I have, and how easy it is to be a positive influence on the many people I get to interact with every day.

The second quote is from an unknown author: “Attitudes are contagious. Make yours worth catching.” I have a friend, John, who passed away from ALS a number of years ago. One of the best things he left me was telling me about part of his morning routine.  He told me that he deliberately smiles when he is shaving his face in the morning. That act sets the tone for the day. Start the day smiling and it becomes easier to smile the rest of the day. He did this until he was no longer able to control his facial muscles. When I shave in the morning, I remember to smile and think of John.

As small business owners and managers we have influence on others that we cannot truly understand. If you come to work grumpy or in a funk, people around you notice.  More than likely they will stay away because attitudes are contagious, and most people don’t want to be grumpy. If you come to work with a genuine smile and positive attitude, that will be contagious in a good way. Over time, the attitude of the boss will permeate the organization. Customers, vendors and employees can tell. They probably will not be able put it into words, but they can feel the corporate attitude.

Dictionary.com defines attitude as “manner, disposition, feeling, position, etc., with regard to a person or thing; tendency or orientation, especially of the mind.”

What is your attitude, disposition regarding your work day? We can define our attitudes.  It takes practice and repetition, and it will have an effect on the company. What is your attitude? May I suggest an attitude of gratitude? An attitude of service? People want to be around others that have a positive attitude, not grumps in funks.
