CHICOPEE — Trinity Health Of New England Medical Group confirmed Friday it will alter its behavioral health services here, but declined to specify the changes.
A long-time behavioral health patient at the group’s Granby Road location was informed during a recent visit that the department there would close in early 2022. A Trinity Health email provided to The Republican by the patient stated that “providers and staff will be working with all affected patients to transition care to affiliated or other providers as appropriate.”
Reached for details, the Hartford-based Trinity Health, which is part of a regional system that includes Mercy Medical Center of Springfield, said in a statement “the difficult decision has been made to implement changes to our Behavioral Health services allowing us to more effectively meet the needs of our community going forward.”
“In keeping with our mission to serve our community as a healing presence we are working with existing patients to ensure a smooth transition of care as needed,” Trinity Health said. “Our commitment to our colleagues remains a top priority. We will make every effort to retain any impacted colleagues. Should they wish to remain with our health ministry we will work to ensure they are appropriately matched with alternate positions within the organization.”
Trinity Health said its decision would not result in the closing of any buildings nor would it have further comment.
The move comes as providers of behavioral health services have seen demand exceed availability because of stress caused by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2018, Trinity Health Of New England announced that all its employed provider practices were renamed Trinity Health Of New England Medical Group. Locally, this involved medical practices affiliated with Mercy, including all RiverBend Medical Group and Mercy Medical Group locations throughout the Greater Springfield Area, as well as specialty practices.
Parent Trinity Health was created from the coming together of three health care system, one of which was Catholic Health East, in 2013. Catholic Health East was formed in January 1998 when 12 health systems, including that of the Holyoke-based Sisters of Providence, whose hospitals included Mercy, integrated to form one system.
The regional system, which includes a number of Connecticut hospitals, was created in 2015.
It had included Providence Behavioral Health Hospital until its sale earlier this year and now operates under new ownership as TaraVista Behavioral Health Center.
Trinity Health Of New England Medical Group is said to currently include some 95 integrated practice locations, from Springfield down through Connecticut, with some 1,110 providers.
