After six years, missing San Antonio cat reunited with her owner - San Antonio Express-News

A cat named Monkey Face that had been missing for six years found her way back home, much to the delight of her owner.

San Antonio Animal Care Services had been caring for Monkey Face after they received a call that the cat looked sick. An officer with the city shelter attempted to contact the cat's owner after scanning its microchip.

The owner, however, no longer lived at the address attached to the microchip but was located two weeks later, according to a Facebook post by the shelter on Sunday. The owner was only identified by the initial of her last name on the social media post.

“Ms. F couldn’t believe it and almost thought there had to be a mistake,” Animal Care Services wrote on Facebook. “Could this really be her cat that has been missing for six years? It sure was and the reunion was PRICELESS! It was easy to see the joy they had cuddling after such a long time.”

Animal Cares Services did not say what Monkey Face was doing for six years or how the feline became separated from her owner. However, the fact that they were reunited after so long underscores the effectiveness of microchips for pets, officials said on Facebook.

A microchip containing the owner’s contact information can be injected into the scruff of a dog or a cat so that they can be returned to their owner if they become separated, according to Animal Care Services’ website. The chip is about the size of a grain of rice, and can be scanned at any veterinarian’s office or animal shelter.

“These stories touch our hearts and reassure us of the work we do,” officials wrote on Facebook. “The power of the microchip, the hard-working team members, the care these pets receive … It’s all connected to our mission to find homes for the pets in our care. And Monkey Face wouldn’t have it any other way!”
