The last time the Jets faced an offensive similar to the Eagles, it resulted in an embarrassing, 45-30 loss to the Indianapolis Colts. They allowed 260 rushing yards with 211 of those yards before first contact. It was the most rushing yards they’d given up since a 2007 game against Washington (296).

The Jets quickly erased the performance from memory, but have been able to learn from those mistakes heading into Sunday’s game against Philadelphia.
“You don’t get very many opportunities to do a do-over, for all intents and purposes. This game is that. It was embarrassing, that game was, from a defensive perspective. I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again, defending the run is kind of the essence of defense sometimes,” Jets defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich said.
“It’s kind of what you’re hitting your hat on and it’s really like the definition and the demonstration of toughness and violence and the stuff that we take pride in as far as a defense is concerned. A quick challenge from the standpoint of obviously we didn’t defend it very well, so it’s going to be a great challenge in that way, but at the same time, to prove to the fans, but probably more importantly to ourselves, that that was a fluke. That’s not who we are.”
The Eagles are No. 1 in the league in rushing yards per game (157.9) and second in yards per carry (5.11). They also have a dual threat running back in Jalen Hurts, who became just the fourth quarterback since 2000 to rush for 50-plus yards in six consecutive games in last week’s loss to the Giants.
“They create a lot of space, they got a really good scheme. They’ve got good offensive linemen, they’ve got some running backs that can take advantage of it and they got a quarterback that adds a whole other running element. So, it’s going to be a great challenge for us,” Ulbrich said. “It was a great challenge in the preseason, great challenge when they came out and practiced the two days. We’re going to have to play our best version of ourselves to get this win and defend the way it’s necessary to win this game. Fantastic challenge.”
While the Jets defense did show signs of improvement against the Texans— the bottom-ranked offense in the league—they are second to last in the league in total yards allowed per game (394.9), rushing yards per game (128.7) and passing (266.2).
“As far as a do-over, playing it like we have a redo from the Colts, we can’t look at it that way,” Jets linebacker C.J. Mosley said. “New team, new opportunity. Whatever they present to us, we’ve got to knock it out.”
